Martyrs’ Square and Civic Tower
Piazza Martiri is located in the upper part of the historic center, at the intersection of Via del Teatro, Corso Mazzini, and Via Gramsci. The square is surrounded by important public buildings, reflecting its historical and social significance within the community.
The Tower, now a symbol of the city, was built in the 15th century next to the church of San Giovanni.During the bombing of 1944 the church was destroyed and the tower also suffered significant damage. In 1950, what remained of the old bell tower was incorporated into a new structure, built with a larger base to raise its height to the 33 meters we see today. Inside, the original clock mechanisms and the bell dating back to ‘600 are preserved. The tower is decorated with Ghibelline battlements. After necessary safety measures have been carried out on the internal staircase, it will once again be possible to access the bell tower, admiring the square and the historic center from above.
